It’s all about OPPORTUNITY; Working for yourself.

Hello!  And welcome to the first installment of the Inspiration to Earn Business Blog!!  The purpose of creating Inspiration to Earn was to help talented artists take what they are applying in daily practice and utilize it to get paid!  The absolute worst thing for me to hear a fellow face painter say is, “I’m just not busy” … I think to myself “HOW?!” when there is literally opportunity to market yourself and get hired everywhere you go!

The first step is recognizing that opportunity is present every where you go!  I do not leave the house without my business cards; My checklist before leaving is always keys, wallet, cell phone, and then business cards.  Perhaps I’ll stop somewhere and it will give me a chance to leave some of my cards for potential clients to pick up, or maybe I’ll get into a conversation at the gas pump with someone whose been tasked to plan a company party.  To leave home empty handed immediately hinders opportunity.  And if you don’t speak up about what you do, it eliminates that opportunity all together.

opportunity

The second step is being aware of your target audience and where opportunity may be primed and ready.  One of my favorite things to do when I grocery shop is paint a cute eye design and shop with a pocket full of business cards.  This creates opportunity for me that would not have otherwise.  I recently found myself at a Food Truck Rally for dinner and as we ate, I looked around and observed DOZENS of families with kids running around… I took some initiative, grabbed my business cards, and began introducing myself to people.  Not only was it well received, I gained 2 bookings out of it!

There are also opportunities in this industry for you to capitalize by finding ways to exchange your talent that may directly benefit you as both an artist and a small business owner.  Be sensitive to these!!  There is a HUGE difference between painting at a multiple hour event for “exposure” versus agreeing to collaborate with a local model or photographer on a photo shoot they have planned, that result in some professional portfolio pieces that you have the right to use as advertising.  Not only will this offer you practice in skill, it could open up the opportunity to be hired for a paid photo shoot since your portfolio will reflect this experience.

Being self employed means saying YES – Say yes to opportunity.  Say yes to crazy ideas.  Say YES every single day when you ask yourself, “Can I really do this?” and say HECK YES to every opportunity you have to try!

Thanks for reading; I’m looking forward to sharing more Inspiration to EARN!

Hi my name is Louise Graham, but my other half calls me LG and it’s always kind of stuck! I’m 27, I live in Wimbledon (yes right by the tennis!) I will keep you all up to date with who I celeb spot this year! And I own LG London Facepainting. I have been painting for around a year and a half now after discovering my passion being thrown into the deep end at a country fair. The second face painter didn’t turn up and as I’ve painted a little before I was volunteered, given a small kit and asked to crack on. I did and though I look back now thinking oh my what did I do those poor kids. I don’t know who that painter was, but I just thank them everyday for not turning up. It’s changed my life!

A bit about my business.
Around 8 months ago I got a bit obsessed with the new ABA pixie gels and noticed thatunnamed (5).jpg a lot of people wanted them, but couldn’t afford the big tubs in every colour. So I started selling smaller pots on a local group, of testers of each colours to help people decide which ones to buy. This went crazy with a huge demand, and at this point I decided it would be a great idea to do a similar thing with other products. Try and work out a way to sell add on products BtoB at the most affordable price I could to help everyone in the industry upsell at every opportunity, to grow their business and be successful. I invented a Christmas advent calendar for painters which I will be bringing back again for this year! And Bling soon followed. I watched the market and found out what was popular and trying to find my nieche, designing my new festival style large Bling pieces and the statement sticky sheet pieces. I started doing bling tutorials on you tube and love the support and positivity everyone was giving. After meeting the wonderful Heather Green whilst she was in London last year I became obsessed with glitter safety, and added a range of cosmetic glitter mixes unnamed (11).jpg
hoping to educate people about what cosmetic really means to help them make informed choices. Then suddenly in 6 months I found myself with a lovely small business and some amazing customers!! I wanted to give it a real stick in your head name and I had these fab little balls of glitter that I sell, so I came up with Glitterballs. I’m now 8 months in, I have recently launched a website and I work everyday alongside my 9-5 job to ensure I am still innovating products all the time, whilst maintaining the business moto of offering affordable products with great personal service. I just love what I do and I hope to keep growing and helping you guys continue to make money and share your talents. Thank you to all my customers who have agreed for me to share their photos of their work. I have credited the photos so please also give them lots of love too. The dream is one day I can give up my 9-5 and do this full time.

I entered the world of face Painting officially with my first gig on February 13th 2016, only months after legally starting my company, ordering supplies, and getting insurance.  It has been a decision and an adventure that I love and don’t regret.  A few months after joining ITP “Inspiration To Paint” and joining other face painting groups I had discovered the jewel creations called Bling….I fell in love instantly!!! I first studied all the different ways they were created and bought supplies.  I had ordered Bling myself from other artists to support and try out, and was amazed how the bling embellishes the beauty of face paint.  The crescendo of ideas began to form and Bang💥N Bling was born!!

unnamed (15)

My main idea and goal behind my BangN Bling is to provide elegant and affordable Bling to accentuate any face painters design.  BangN Bling will elevate your business in many ways.  In my personal experience, using bling has resulted in many referrals and repeat clients.  My Bling can address the needs of budding face painters as well as established artists.   BangN Bling provides general Bling in many styles and colors for regular gigs to large events, and evolving with themes and Special occasions.  My Bling will have your face paint looking Bang💥N

Her group Inspiration To Paint is a testament to her commitment and her willingness to inspire and encourage face painters across the globe, not to mention her upcoming appearances in premier events like FabaTv and the St. Louis convention. I am positive she will bring in a lot of pizzazz to my BangN Bling.”

I have always  been an artist of one kind or another since I was a little girl. I have fondsusan9 memories of laying on the shelf of my bookcase while I drew on the bottom of the shelf above me. My love of art in all its forms has grown since then. I discovered face painting while working for the company I am now retired from. One of the supervisors was doing face painting for one of the company parties and asked if I’d like to help out since I was artistic.  I did little cheek designs and loved how the kids faces would light up when they saw their artwork! I did it from time to time since then but I had no idea that little bit of face painting would lead me to a fabulous career years later!

After seeing more and more face and body art on social media, and lots of encouragement from my husband, I knew I had to try it out for real this time and so learned all I could from YouTube and the internet. I ordered many products that I liked and disliked, as many newbies do. I look back at my early days(2011), and marvel at the fact that I have learned so much since I have been doing face and body art professionally.  I also have so much more to learn in the future. The face and body artsusan3.jpg industry is ever evolving and I plan to evolve with it.

I am so thankful that I am finally doing something that I absolutely love, that I am good at and get paid to do! It really is a dream come true.

I especially enjoy painting sugar skulls. They are a beautiful tribute to those who have passed and can really tell a story about them. If I had to pick only one thing to paint for the rest of my life, sugar skulls would definitely be it!!

Body painting is also a great love of mine. I have grown so much in that field and hope to advance more now that I have retired from my 9-5 job and have the time to focus and be more creative. Last year I started a Battle of the Bodyart in Albuquerque in order to give a fair and fun platform for the body artists in town to showcase their work. In June I will be hosting my 4th competition.

I feel as though the possibilities are endless and look forward to what the future holds for me and my business!

The Good & The Bad of ITP

13528854_10210003599351050_6824511829261987725_n.jpgEmotion guide for beginners could be title to. Joined this group totally clueless, about face painting, about brushes, about techniques. When Abby was saying that this group main goal is to paint every day, improving your painting skills I was like….”yeah right.”Some of us are here to learn, but did you see those “out of the world “artists!??OMG,I know! They are here for the win and prizes and glory! Yup,that is what I thought. But guess what, those artists were best thing in group;they were first to give support, they understood all insecurities, they were beginners to. Don’t be discouraged by someone who is at another level, learn from them,we are on same team. We are stars on ITP sky! At the beginning I thought that I was invisible,really!18157037_10213106044030228_7626310314800419515_n.jpg Seemed like all comments, likes kind words are going to same people, and me…not good enough…Then I decided to get more involved, and guess what;when you give love and support you get it back to. ITP group is special because that kindness and love from people around the globe….from Chicago to Croatia…there’s no distance here that matters. Sometimes you won’t get why someone won that month, but be sure that every single winner is on that throne because they deserve it! It’s not only about painting things that blow our mind,it’s much more. I would get frustrated when I’d saw that assignment says OTJ(on the job)design and then see masterpieces that would take me few hours to do!Talk about pressure! I have answer for 17361838_10212705240930401_1317684581617077804_n.jpgthat one to;and gonna write it in big letters; DON’T COMPARE WITH OTHERS! If it was perfection that wins, there would be 5-6 same winners, and maybe not even one!So it’s about painting every day, support, improvement, and yes even You with five-six brushes and few paints can be a winner!! I know I am,although didn’t win any prize (not yet),as cheese it may sound I got much more. I’ve learned so much, improved my skills,my confidence,my business and that’s something that no prize can match. So I guarantee you that you too will see results of being part of this group and they’ll blow you mind and make your heart bigger.

About me

I have always been fairly creative. I come from a creative family. My gran was and artist and teacher, my Mum worked in the theater industry and my Dad is a singer and musician so was always encouraged in my creativeness. After leaving school with a higher in art, I studied fashion design for a while then Theater arts. My dream was always to go to drama school but I was seduced by the glamour of being old enough to go out to clubs and concerts and meeting my partner that I never got round to it. After that life happened! I got a boring office job and moved in with my partner and so on… In 2007 I became a mum to my daughter Brodie and in 2012 I was a mother again to my daughter Paige. After I had Paige I decided to leave my job to look after her instead of sending her to childcare and so became a stay at home mumcorin5.jpg

It was shortly after Paige’s 1st birthday that my friend (and sister from another mister) Kat, who ran a children’s entertainment business, asked me to help her out with face painting.

I had first tried face painting as a teenager when was part of a youth theater group probably about 20 years ago. I loved doing it back then but never thought of it as being a job. I then did some face painting and stage make-up when I was studying Theater arts, but again I didn’t see it in my future.

As I was not earning anything I decided to give it a go and get some pennies for my pocket. I was very nervous but I remembered how much I had enjoyed it in the past and so I went for it anyway. Then… I was bitten by the face painting bug… you know the one J

corin4.jpgAfter about a year of helping out with my friends business she decided that she was going to call it a day with children’s entertainment and focus on other things. She asked me if I’d like to take over her company. I agreed though changed the name from Mellow Drama to Enchanted Brush. I was really only happy doing the face painting part of it so I just decided to offer Face painting and Glitter tattoos, rather than all the other games and drama classes that Kat had also offered. I am happy to say that my wee business is doing great 3 years down the line.

I am now booked out nearly every Saturday and Sunday making kids smile (and some adults too). I also do bump painting which I really enjoy. I love to take the time to design something really special for a mum to be and it just feels great to be part of that special time in their life. I am always looking to improve and attended my first jam earlier this year and I am looking to take a course on SFX make-up this year and I would also love to break in to the world of body painting.

Through this experience I have learned a few things about my self. First of all is that I am a ‘if your going to do some thing, do it well’ kind of person. I fell in love with face painting and it quickly because an obsession. I remember how excited I was when I received my first big face paint supplies order. I felt like a kid at Christmas. My kids were even enthusiastic about it too and let me paint their faces, with no argument or bribery (face painter problems!). I have also found that I am competitive, participating in online competitions when I can. Something else I’ve learned is that I love kids, snot and all! (Although, I suppose I knew that anyway).

Face painting has opened my creative floodgates. For years I didn’t draw or paint or make anything because I felt like I had no motivation but since starting the face painting I have painted canvases, wall murals, made clothes, hair clips and just really being creative for fun! I had lost that part of me for a long time and it feels really good to have it back.

I am a member of the International Face Painting Association and I am proud to be part of the international face painting community and am looking forward to what the future will bring for me and my business.

For me it feels like joining ITP was kind of, at the risk of sounding dramatic, my destiny! It’s helped me to bring my work up a level. I’ve also met (virtually) some awesome people and my work has been noticed by some figureheads of the industry which feels brilliant!

I also want to say thanks to Abby and the admins of the ITP group. Thanks for having the idea to start this group and for making it the powerhouse that it has become. X

Featured Artist Interview

1. How did you hear about the Inspiration To Paint group?

One of my Facebook friends had joined and her entries were showing on my timeline. I thought it looked interesting and joined up.
2. How long have you been a part of the group? How many consecutive days have you been painting for?

I joined the group in September but only watched from the sidelines for a few months. I
participated in the December challenge but dropped out. Started again in Jan and have painted 129 days.
3. What is one of your favorite designs you’ve painted? Or one of your favorite themes?

I dont know if i have a favorite paint, there have been so many! I love scary designs so
i do alot of those in the autumn that I love but I also love painting pretty things too! I really can’t decide on a favorite. I just love what I do and so anything that I paint I enjoy.

4. Every month the ITP group gets new members; Can you give some
tips to one of the new painters joining the group?

Paint from the heart, don’t compare yourself to others. Do what you can and don’t worry about being the best or skipping a day. Also if you need help everyone is very supportive so just ask.

5. We all enjoy your work so much and we are dying to know…What
are some of your favorite paints & brushes?

My kit is mostly made up of Global and Superstar paints but I use FPA for my white line work and also
cameleon neon. My favorite brushes are Loew and Cornell or The Face Painting Shop in the uk.
6. What are some ways that all your practicing has impacted your
business?

I post most of my work on to my facebook page and I find that the more I share the more
people see my page. Since I started ITP regularly in Jan I have gained 209 followers.
7. If you could choose a theme for next month’s challenge; what
would it be?

Hmm, Im not sure, maybe something like only using 2 colors or something 3d or , and this is probably too complicated to arrange but you get given someone else number and you have to paint something of theirs.
8. Who is one of your favorite artist in the Face Painting industry?
You can only pick one!

Only one! The first name to come in to my head was Debz Mills. She has similar tates to me I think pretty but dark at the same time if that makes sense, I love her work! There are so many others though!!
9. Which design do you absolutely hate painting whenever a kid asks
for it?

I hate My Little Pony. In fact I hate characters in general. I am a perfectionist so if I am painting a character I need it to look exactly like the thing I am painting or else it annoys me and leaves me feeling bad for the rest of the day.
10. If you were stuck on island and can only take 1 stencil, 1 brush, 1
color, and 1 cake, which ones would it be?

The stencil would be some sort of switly patterend one like HAS 2005.the Brush would be Lowe Cornell no5 round. Superstar line black and Globals Bright Rainbow so that I have all the colours.
11.Do you think you will try to paint for another 365 days ever again?

Yes! starting Next January (thats if I make it through 2017 without missing a day).
12. If you were trying to recruit artist to join the Inspiration to Paint
group… what would you say to them?
I would say, Join the group if you want to improve your skill level. The daily challenges provide the opportunity to paint things that maybe you wouldn’t have before either because you would never have thought to or because you think it it outside your skill level or even because it is a subject that you have no interest in painting, it spurns you on to try something different. Other reasons to join is that as soon as you
start the challenge you are part of the ITP community! your work is being seen by your peers on a regular basis and their support and kindness acts as a boost if you are feeling down or you have painters block!
Also, the inspiration and ideas you gain from other peoples work comes in handy when you are on the job.

Step 1 (first 3 pics) sponge your colour over one eyelid and onto the fore head in a wing shape. On the other side sponge below the eye in a smaller wing shape and add a little colour to the eyelid but don’t go any higher. Add glitter while base is still wet.

Step 2 (next 2 pics) either paint or stencil leopard print or any other animal print over the sponges area adding eyeliner and any other flourishes you like. You can make both sides the same or change it up like I’ve done here.

Step 3 (next 2 pics) add white highlights to your spots and stripe and wherever else you think is necessary.

Step 4 (next 2 pics) ~optional~ add liquid bling of your choice to the same areas that you added the white highlights.

Last pic – done!

Check out Corin’s awesome kids! They are interested in becoming YouTube superstars so let’s all show them some love & support!

It was by amazing chance that I was connected with Abby just a month before she started Inspiration to Paint (ITP). I was amazed at how much drive and detection Abby had to paint everyday for a month! When I saw her post that she was going to do it again I didn’t even take a second to think about it, I just had to join her!!! Once I joined this brand new group of amazing women, I was addicted!! One month became two then I had been painting all summer!!! This group became so close we were like family, pushing each other further then we ever had even imagined. ITP gave me the confidence to put my work out there for everyone to see. May people don’t know this but after I graduated from collage with alea2.jpg BFA in Painting, I got married (exactly 2 weeks after actually haha) and we got pregnant with our first child right away! Unfortunately we lost our first baby which sent me into a huge depression. I refused to paint for almost two years after that. It wasn’t until my son was born that my mom told me I needed to get out of the house so she surprised me with my first face painting kit ( a DFX laptop starter kit) and literally drove me to my first gig. I played around with it for a year but it wasn’t until Abby showed up in my life that I really started painting seriously again. ITP has changed my life in that it gave me painting back and a painty power family to motivate and support me.
